Spooky and Delicious Jello Brains

Personal

You know how sometimes, right around Halloween, you get a hankering for sweet, delicious, guilt-free brains but just can’t seem to find the right recipe? Well this jello brain is for you.

I was in my local dollar store the other day scoping out the Halloween decor when I came across a plastic brain mold. It immediately went into my cart of course because I had no doubt I could figure out something awesomely creepy to make with it. Preferably something edible.

Because what else does one do with a brain if not eat it?

If your local stores don’t carry brain molds don’t fret because you can get your very own brain making plastic mold here, or here if you prefer silicone.

My initial thought was to make a giant brain cake pop. Since the mold is plastic, that means whatever edible creation I was going to make with it could not involve high heat. I liked the idea of a brain cake pop, though I’ve never made a cake pop before. I figured the steps would go something like:

  1. Bake a cake. Make it red velvet for the creep factor.
  2. Crumble the cake, mix it with icing and load up the mold.
  3. Remove the blood red cake pop from the mold (hopefully in one piece)
  4. Create a graymatter-esque colored icing to drizzle on top.

Cake pop brain sounded pretty awesome but I wanted my brain to be edible and jiggly. And nothing jiggles like jello.

Not only does jello make for a more convincing-looking brain, it also is a lot simpler. Jello brain only has four ingredients. One of those is water so it almost doesn’t even count.

Jello Brain Ingredients

This creepy and delicious jello brain is shockingly realistic yet super easy to make!

The other awesome thing about jello brain is that it can quickly got from fun kids treat brain to adults only brain with the addition of spirits of the non-haunting variety. If you do decide to add alcohol, just cut down on the amount of water. Be sure to keep it away from the kiddos!

CREEPY JELLO BRAINS
Ingredients:
1 large brain mold
2 packages of peach or orange jello
1 ¾ cup of boiling water
¾ cup cold water
5oz fat free evaporated milk
Liquid Food Coloring
Non-stick cooking spray

  1. Add the contents of the two jello packages to a bowl.
  2. Pour in boiling water and stir well until fully combined (about one minute).
  3. Add ¾ cup of cold water and 5oz of fat free evaporated milk.
  4. Add food coloring to making the brain resemble gray matter. Because food coloring formulas may vary, add colors slowly so you can adjust the color as needed. For this brain, I used 6 drops of blue and 5 drops of red food coloring.
  5. Spray your brain mold with non-stick cooking spray.
  6. Pour jello into the mold and refrigerate for 6 hours.
  7. Jiggle the jello brain to loosen it up then flip it over.

And there you have it! Sweet, delicious jello brains on demand. You can use it as a fun dessert or put it in the center of your Halloween candy to freak out unsuspecting trick or treaters!
